airport security

It is high time to face the fact that regardless of how prepared you are, you’re going to be spending a few hours in the airport before your flight. Here are the tips you can consider in order to get through the airport security faster:

1. Go to the airport 2 hours ahead of time, especially if you are unfamiliar with the system.

Check-in and security have always been absurdly slow, but now they are taking even slower with the new rules implemented in the last few months.

2. Weigh your luggage in advance.

Airlines are very strict about weight limits – it is often about 50 pounds or 23 kls. Don’t wait until you get to the check-in counter to weigh up your luggage, do it at your home with the help of a digital luggage scale. Or you can try to manage your bulky suitcase onto a bathroom scale

3. Keep all of your travel documents in one place.

If there is a way to clip it to your body or strap it around your shoulder, that’s great. If you are studying overseas or doing some weekend traveling, you have to keep copies of your visas, passport, plane tickets, hotel info, etc. with you while you fly.

4. Keep your passport and plane ticket in an easy to access but safe place at all times.

This is plain and simple; you need to be organized when going through airplane security.

5. When you are at the security checkpoint, be prepared to remove your boots, hat, belt, jacket, etc.

6. Be prepared to take your laptop out of your bag.

You don’t hide it under extra clothing, books, toiletries, food and whatever else you have in there because you’ll be obliged to take it out of your carry-on at security for inspection. Just a note to consider, they usually have you put laptops in a bin isolated from the rest of your items.

7. Know how to bring liquids in your carry-on bag.

There are various rules in different countries, so you need to check them before you pack and travel. In the USA, bottles can be no larger than 3 ounces, and they must fit in a standard 1 liter Ziploc bag. In most European countries, the limit is 100ml (close to 3 ounces), and just like in the USA, they must all fit in a 1 liter transparent plastic bag. Take the Ziploc bag out of your carry on, and put it in the bin to pass through the scanner with the rest of your items. By the way, one of these might be more useful – they are called travel bottles and you can get them on Amazon.com.

8. Dress appropriately.

You are probably saying to yourself – someone who dresses well is just as likely to have a bomb as someone who isn’t, and I don’t think security officers are biased. Don’t fool yourself, its human nature to be more worried by people who are outfitted poorly. I’m not saying and suggesting that you need to wear a tuxedo, I just don’t think it’s a good idea to dress your “I love pot” statement t-shirt through the airline security.

We hope that these simple yet very practical tips will help get you to airport security real fast. Enjoy your trip!
