TSA Regulations

Before you go to the airport, especially if it’s your first airline flight in a while, you must take the time to get familiar with common security rules and basic luggage rules, and keep in mind to keep valuables or important personal items in your carry-on luggage and not in your checked luggage.

Going through airport security without any extra delays will be easier if you avoid carrying banned or restricted things through the security checkpoint. While the following descriptions of forbidden or restricted items are based on TSA rules and regulations, most countries have similar limitations.

The following things are completely prohibited from plane and must not be carried to the airport:

Explosive and Inflammable Materials

Gunpowder such as percussion caps and black powder, dynamite, blasting caps, fireworks, plastic explosives, plastic explosives, grenades, replicas of incendiary devices and reproductions of plastic explosives.

Combustible Items

Gasoline, lighter fluid, gas torches, cooking fuel, other types of flammable liquid fuel, paint thinner, flammable paints, turpentine and aerosols.

Gases and Pressure Containers

Aerosols, oxygen tanks, carbon dioxide cartridges, pepper spray, mace, tear gas, self-inflating rafts, and deeply refrigerated gases like liquid nitrogen.

Other Hazardous Things

Swimming pool or spa chlorine, spray paint, tear gas and torch lighters.

Items Restrained to Checked Bags

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has barred the following things from airplane cabins and carry-on luggage but may with some exceptions be transported as checked baggage:

Knives

Knives of any length, description composition except for plastic or round bladed butter knives

Sporting Goods

These are baseball, softball, cricket bats, hockey sticks, lacrosse sticks, ski poles, spear guns, bows and arrows, golf clubs, and pool cues

Cutting Tools

Examples of this are carpet knives and box cutters, any device with a folding or retractable blade, metal scissors with pointed tips and linoleum flooring cutters

Firearms

BB guns, rifles, flare guns and pistols

Firearm imitations

Firearm Parts

They must be treated like weapons and only transported in checked luggage.

Ammunition

Only properly packed ammo is allowed

Paintball Guns

These are compressed air guns, like paintball guns, may be transported in checked luggage without the compressed air cylinder attached.

Tools

Tools greater than seven inches in length and power tools such as the drills are only permitted on in checked luggage.

Dry Ice (Frozen Carbon Dioxide)

Up to four pounds (1.8 kg) may be brought if the checked package is ventilated.
